Thanks for answering my question! Incredibly helpful.

It looks like many struggle finding that "truly differentiated product" to offer. While finding that main form of content is intuitive—you just keep making changes until you hit something that sticks and that people enjoy—finding that alternate form is tough because the only direct feedback you have are conversions.

"Or it could be just an entirely different kind of article format than what gets sent in the free newsletter." Do you have any examples of unique article formats people use as paid-perks?

Check out the interview I did with the founder of Front Office Sports. When they launched their paid product Insights, they hired a former Goldman analyst who could provide deep market insights that didn't exist in the free product:
